What is Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity?

Concealed carry reciprocity means that one state recognizes and honors another state’s concealed carry permit or license. The two states have a reciprocal agreement and mutually recognize each others permits.

Concealed Carry Reciprocity allows a person with a concealed carry permit to travel to other states that recognize that permit and legally carry a concealed handgun.

The rules of reciprocity vary greatly from state to state, so it is imperative that you know the rules for the states that you intend to visit.

Tennessee Concealed Carry Reciprocal States.

Many states have Constitutional Carry or Permitless Carry laws that allow concealed and/or Open carry without a license or permit. These states are listed at States with Constitutional Carry Laws.

Tennessee is a Permitless Carry State. anyone that can legally possess a handgun, is at least 21 years old and meets ALL the following Tennessee Requirements can carry concealed in Tennessee without a permit.

Tennessee Constitutional or Permitless Carry Requirements

  • You must be 21 years of age or older (or 18 years of age and honorably discharged from the military; or is active duty after completing basic training).
  • You are lawfully allowed to possess a handgun.
  • You are in a place where you have a right to be.
  • You haven’t been convicted of stalking.
  • You haven’t been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicant in this state or any other state more than once in the past 10 years or once in the past five years.
  • You haven’t been adjudicated mentally defective or judicially committed to a mental institution.
  • You haven’t been hospitalized in a mental institution or had a court appoint a conservator for the person by reason of a mental defect.
  • You are not otherwise prohibited by 18 U.S.C. 922(9), as it existed on Jan. 1, 2021, from possessing a firearm.

Tennessee Enhanced and Concealed Handgun Permits

Tennessee issues 2 types of permits, an Enhanced Permit and a Concealed Handgun Permit. The Enhanced Permit requires an 8 Hour training course approved by the state and allows you to carry in more places than the Concealed Handgun Permit. The Concealed Handgun Permit requires a 90 minute online course and costs less, but there are more restrictions.

Also, some reciprocal states only recognize the Enhanced Permit as notated in the table below.

Tennessee Concealed Carry Reciprocity: States That Recognize a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP)

The table below shows the Tennessee reciprocity status of all 50 states and Washington, DC. Many states recognize the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP).

If the table indicates “Resident Permits only”, it means the permit must be issued to a resident of the state. In other words, if you hold a Non-Resident Permit, it is NOT honored in that state.

If the table shows “Handguns only” it means that only handguns may be carried concealed under the Tennessee permit. Some state’s permits allow the concealed carry of stun guns, knives, blackjacks, etc. in the issuing state.

If the state has an asterisk, it is a Constitutional or Permitless Carry State. This means that generally, a permit is not needed to carry concealed in this state as long as the carrier meets the minimum age requirement.

The minimum age in Constitutional Carry states ranges from 18-21, so be sure you know the age requirement in the state you intend to carry, as well as that state’s rules and prohibited areas!

Tennessee Concealed Carry Reciprocity: Tennessee Recognizes These State’s Concealed Carry Permits

Tennessee has a minimum age of 21 to carry concealed. Also, Tennessee honors Resident and Non-Resident Concealed Carry Permits from any other state.
