South Carolina Concealed Carry Reciprocity: What States Honor South Carolina’s Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP)

What is Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity?

Concealed carry reciprocity means that one state recognizes and honors another state’s concealed carry permit or license. The two states have a reciprocal agreement and mutually recognize each others permits.

Concealed Carry Reciprocity allows a person with a concealed carry permit to travel to other states that recognize that permit and legally carry a concealed handgun.

The rules of reciprocity vary greatly from state to state, so it is imperative that you know the rules for the states that you intend to visit.

Constitutional Carry in South Carolina is NOT Legal

Many states have Constitutional Carry or Permitless Carry laws that allow Concealed Carry and/or Open carry without a license or permit. These states are listed at States with Constitutional Carry Laws.

South Carolina is NOT a Constitutional Carry State.

South Carolina Concealed and Open Carry Permit

You must have a permit to legally Open Carry or Concealed Carry in South Carolina. The permit must be a South Carolina CWP (Concealed Weapons Permit) OR a Concealed Carry Permit from a state that South Carolina recognizes. These states are listed at the bottom of this page.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) issues Concealed Weapons Permits or CWPs to residents. Non residents must own property in SC to obtain a CWP. In addition, military personnel stationed in South Carolina may also apply for a CWP.

The Concealed Weapons Permit will also allow the holder to carry a concealed handgun in another state that recognizes the South Carolina CWP. These states are listed below.

South Carolina CWPs require an applicant to pass a criminal background check and take an 8-hour Firearms training course that is approved by the state.

South Carolina Concealed Carry Reciprocity: States That Recognize South Carolina’s Concealed Carry Permit (CCH)

The table below shows the South Carolina reciprocity status of all 50 states and Washington, DC. Many states recognize a South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP).

If the table indicates “Resident Permits only” for your state, it means you must be a resident of the state. In other words, if you hold a Non-Resident Permit, it is NOT honored in that South Carolina.

If the state has an asterisk, it is a Constitutional or Permitless Carry State. This means that generally, a permit is not needed to carry concealed in this state as long as the carrier meets the minimum age requirement.

The minimum age in Constitutional Carry states ranges from 18-21, so be sure you know the age requirement in the state you intend to carry.
