What is Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity?
Concealed carry reciprocity means that one state recognizes and honors another state’s concealed carry permit or license. The rules of reciprocity vary greatly from state to state, so it is imperative that you know the rules for the states that you intend to visit.
Alabama Concealed Carry and Permitless Carry
Alabama is a permitless-carry state. Permitless carry became effective January 1, 2023.
Generally, a person who is at least 19 years old, is legally permitted to possess a firearm under Alabama and federal law, and otherwise complies with Alabama law may carry a handgun without obtaining an Alabama concealed carry permit. Specific exceptions and restrictions apply, including restrictions concerning prohibited persons and prohibited locations.
Alabama continues to issue concealed carry permits to qualifying Alabama residents. These permits remain useful, particularly when traveling to another state that recognizes an Alabama permit.
Alabama does not issue concealed carry permits to nonresidents. However, Alabama recognizes valid handgun carry licenses issued by other states when the license holder is a nonresident of Alabama. A person carrying in Alabama under an out-of-state license must comply with Alabama law.
Carrying in Other States With an Alabama Permit
Having an Alabama concealed carry permit does not automatically authorize you to carry in every other state. Each state determines whether it recognizes an Alabama permit and what restrictions apply.
Some states recognize an Alabama resident permit, some recognize it only subject to age or other restrictions, and others do not recognize Alabama permits at all.
Permitless carry is also different from concealed carry reciprocity. A state may not recognize an Alabama permit but may nevertheless allow a qualifying Alabama resident to carry without a permit under that state’s permitless-carry law.
Always verify the current laws of every state in which you intend to carry before traveling. Reciprocity, permitless-carry laws, minimum ages, prohibited locations, vehicle-carry rules and other firearm laws can change.

Alabama Concealed Carry Reciprocity: Alabama Recognizes These States’ Concealed Carry Permits
Alabama recognizes valid out-of-state handgun carry licenses held by nonresidents.
For ordinary permitless carry, Alabama law generally allows a person who is at least 19 years old and is not otherwise prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm to carry a pistol concealed or openly without a permit. Limited exceptions may apply to minors in specific circumstances.
Alabama recognizes valid out-of-state handgun permits. Visitors carrying under an out-of-state permit must comply with Alabama law while in the state.
As with every state, you cannot carry a handgun if you are prohibited from possessing a firearm under applicable federal or state law.
