When Should I Concealed Carry?

Should I concealed carry all the time?

Should I only carry when I think I’m going to an area where I might need my gun? In my opinion you should carry concealed every single time you leave your home.

Carrying Concealed with a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster

Carrying concealed should become a habit. When I leave my house to go out, I grab my wallet, my car keys and my gun. I keep my Kimber 1911 in a GunVault located on a bookshelf in my home office which is by the front door. This keeps it locked up safely (I have young grandchildren that often visit) and also handy and quick to access. I keep my holster right next to the GunVault, so it takes literally 30 seconds to don my Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster, access my 1911, perform a chamber check and magazine check slip the gun into the holster and I am out the door.

Your gun is useless if it is not on you when you need it.

It does not matter if I am running to the local convenience store for milk, or going out for the day, the holster and gun come with me. I do not know when I might run across a domestic argument, a drunk and violent person, a carjacker, etc. I want to be ready all the time. I live in what most would think is a pretty quiet suburb, but there have been brutal murders, carjackings and armed robberies within a few miles of my nice suburban housing development.

If you need more reasons to carry, consider the current political environment with riots occurring each night in some locations. You may think that this is only happening in the inner cities, but the protest mindset is alive and well in people everywhere and violence could erupt at any time in any place.

I do not say this to alarm you, and the last thing I want is for people to stop living their lives in fear of a violent altercation, I just want people to be aware and prepared for the worst.

Carry Concealed for your Family’s Protection

I have decided to be one of the Protectors of my self and my family, and if necessary, innocent victims. I have taken and continue to take self defense firearms training. I continue to educate myself and dry practice my shooting skills. I visit the gun range regularly to test and hone my ability to draw and hit targets accurately and consistently. I keep my firearms clean, lubricated, loaded and safely locked in quick access gun vaults.

Get Trained and Protected

I believe in not only carrying my firearm all the time, but knowing how and when to use it, and having legal protection if I need to defend myself. This means getting regular professional defensive handgun training as well as practicing regularly at the local range to keep my skills fresh.

One important and often overlooked component of self defense preparation is Legal Protection. This is basically a membership with a company such as Firearms Legal Protection that will provide legal protection and funding in case I need to use deadly force in self defense. This protection is critical in my opinion but overlooked by many people that carry a deadly weapon.

Why do I need legal protection if I am just defending myself?

Unfortunately, many instances of completely legal use of deadly force will involve a lawyer at some point. Good lawyers are EXPENSIVE! Some will require a retainer up front of up to $50,000!

Reasons you may need a lawyer:

  • A good self defense lawyer will tell you what to say to police and what NOT to say.
  • Your lawyer will help you show and prove that your actions were justified.
  • To help show that you are an upstanding, law-abiding citizen.
  • You may be sued by the family of the person you shot!
  • You may have unintentionally damaged property or innocent bystanders during the chaos of a self defense encounter.
  • Just to have someone on your side during an extremely stressful and life changing event.

As you can see, I am a big advocate of being prepared as much as possible when it comes to the safety of myself and my family. Please, get training, practice and get some legal protection!
